Dear Mr Delaney,
Look I’ll come straight to the point. This is a sucky letter to try to get you to reconsider me as a writer. I know I told you that I had nothing to add to what I’d already written and that I regretted the stuff I’d said about Ben and to destroy all my work. Well, I really hope you didn’t (unfortuanatly I did) Some stuff has started happening to me lately that has changed how I feel about everything. I’ts got me writing again.
This book might be the only good thing that happens to me in this country and it might be the only thing that I leave with.
If you show faith in me now I believe that I will be able to finish something that should be much better than the little bit that I sent you, which you seemed to like.
Two things though. Firstly, could you please send me back a copy of my earlier work, as I said, I deleated my copy. Because I haven’t had it, I’ve just started writing from a point in the future. I’ll work out the links later.
Secondly, if I can produce say, ten thousand words or so, could you manage to send me some kind of advance? I think I may really need the money.
Thanks
Ben.
Dear Ben.
We at Delaney Publishing are very encouraged by your decision to continue writing.
Yes we kept the manuscript which you sent us. I’ve been in this industry a long time, worked with all manner of authors, and I’m yet to meet one that could walk away from a book once they’d begun writing it. We had more than a hunch that you would return, Ben.
Of course I can return to you a copy of your earlier work. I will have my secretary do it promptly.
The issue of an advance is always a tricky one with first time writers. As I stated in our previous correspondence, it is policy that we don’t provide one. However if you could demonstrate to me both extenuating circumstances and the unquestionable ability to produce a quality product, then I may be able to do something. Send me some more of your work and I’ll present your petition to the board at our meeting on Thursday.
Best of luck with your endevers
Yours Sincerely,
Mr Bill Delaney.
